Bits & pieces today:

We went to Halifax yesterday to watch Moulin Rouge, to eat sushi & to buy comics. All three missions went swimmingly, with only a few bad notes to record. Such as, the 20 copies of Spookshow #1 don't seem to be selling. I'm sure that this is just because Dav isn't a celebrity yet, and once his name is firmly established they'll sell like hotcakes. And if by some chance this doesn't happen in a timely manner, we've decided that we will buy the comics ourselves. Will they go into the ignoble 'please take us home for free' bin? Answer: not on our f'ing watch.

Moulin Rouge was even better the second time, thanks for asking. I dragged the Boy to a matinee before it leaves Nova Scotia theatres altogether, and we had an excellent time watching and murmuring about the metafictional aspects of the story (we are terribly pretentious, darling). I agree with him that the bone-crunching techno in the Can-Can scenes brings an analogue of the shock & excitement of the historical Moulin Rouge to a modern audience (he so smrt.)

Today we went to our first church service in the historical Covenanter Church down the road. The church was originally built by Loyalist Settlers, who moved into the area to take over the property of the French-speaking Acadians expelled by the British Government. It's heated by a wood stove to this day; consequently, although it's a historical site open every day, it's only used as a church during this most temperate month. It's a gorgeous little place: closed pews, 10-foot pulpit, charming pioneer cemetery. We sang hymns from the old hymnbook, all full of Lord and Him and Master, which fit perfectly with the building (although not as well with the liberal leanings of the modern United Church). I had a good time imagining the inner turmoil of the 'inclusive language' proponents in our congregation. What can I say, I'm a brat. Put me in active church life and I'm still a brat.

My cold isn't getting any better, but I think my immune system went on vacation...so that's understandable.

And that's that.
