april 4, 2001.
I did a bad thing today.
I was whizzing through my Fifth Business lesson at top speed, about ¾ of the way through it, when I became aware that one of my "problem" corners hadn't been problematic for awhile. So I glance over for a split second and notice that my peskiest class mouth has closed itself down: there was a kid sleeping in my class even as I was teaching. And you know what? I didn't care about egalitarian theory or the rights of individual learners or anything similar, I was just glad for a second that he was quiet. I pretended that I hadn't noticed. His seatmate caught my eye and gestured over at Sleeping Beauty. I nodded to show that I understood, but continued to teach. Then the other kids started noticing & giggling. It's at this point that I had to do something. Class order demanded action, and so forth.
I wandered over, still lecturing, and tapped briskly on his desk until I saw his woozy little eyes open up. Once he was awake he began to annoy me with constant chatter - who would've guessed? Still, it had to happen sometime, I mean he would've woken up eventually. Although I might secretly wish that this student was in a temporary and non-painful coma in my class, I'm going to have to learn to deal with this type. Eventually.
